Sigi Hart was born to Polish parents in Berlin, Germany in 1925. In his testimony, he recalls celebrating his bar mitzvah in a burned-down temple immediately following the November 1938 Kristallnacht Pogroms. As World War II began, Sigi tried to outrun the Nazis, first fleeing to Belgium, then hiding in France and Italy. He was arrested and deported to Auschwitz in November 1943, and then was sent work in chemical and munitions factories. He was liberated from Bergen Belsen in April 1945.
