(22 Feb 2019) MORE TRIBUTES FOR ICONIC COUTURIER KARL LAGERFELD
Tributes continue to pour in for fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld who died this week.
In Milan where designers are showing their fall/winter 2019 collections for fashion week, colleagues and fans spoke about Chanel's iconic couturier.
Carlo Capasa, President of Camera Nazionale della Moda (Italian Chamber of Fashion) said Thursday (21 FEB. 2019), "he was an absolute icon who gave to fashion more than anybody else. And it's a big loss. We can only be sad but as he did not like to be celebrated for his death, I think we should celebrate him for his work he has been doing, which was incredible and great."
Lagerfeld whose accomplished designs as well as trademark white ponytail, high starched collars and dark enigmatic glasses dominated high fashion for the last 50 years was around 85 years old when he died Tuesday.
Such was the enigma surrounding the German-born designer that even his age was a point of mystery for decades, with reports he had two birth certificates, one dated 1933 and the other 1938.
He was of the most hardworking figures in the fashion world holding down the top design jobs at LVMH-owned luxury label Fendi from 1977, and Paris' family-owned powerhouse Chanel in 1983.
Lagerfeld's designs quickly trickled down to low-end retailers, giving him an almost unprecedented impact on the entire fashion industry.
American fashion journalist Jessica Michault said, "Karl was one the most savvy fashion designers that we've ever seen. He was really able to capture, as they say in french, l'air du temp, really capture what was going on in the world, be it the influencers, be it the style, be it the aesthetic, and he was somebody who really was able to adapt and never really looked at the past but always looked at the future. And I think that that's one of the things that's always hard to do when you get older, to continue to be relevant and he was always relevant, all the way to the end."
