The American writer and humorist Samuel Clemens, better known by the pen name, Mark Twain, was born in Florida, a village in Monroe County, Missouri, on November 30, 1835. Twain used to tell a tragic story of his childhood. It seems, according to the story, that Mark was born twins. He and his twin looked so much alike, that no one, not even their mother, could tell them apart. One day, while the nurse was bathing them, one of them slipped in the bathtub and was drowned. No one ever knew which twin it was that was drowned — “And therein,” says Mark, ‘‘was the tragedy. Everyone thought I was the one that lived, but I wasn’t. It was my brother who lived. I was the one that was drowned.”
