When we observe sunlight, we are indeed looking into the past. Light from the Sun takes about 8 minutes and 20 seconds to travel 149.6 million kilometers (93 million miles) to reach Earth. Thus, the sunlight we see now actually left the Sun over eight minutes ago. This means we are seeing the Sun as it was in the past, not as it is at this very moment.
