Lecce is an Italian city of about 95,140 inhabitants, capital of the province of the same name in Puglia, southern Italy.

An important city in southeastern Puglia, located in the center of the Salento (the peninsula that forms the "heel" of the Italian "boot"), Lecce has been for centuries a prosperous cultural, religious and commercial center and one of the most populous cities of the Kingdom of Naples. Today it is still active in the agricultural, service and ceramic industries. It is the seat of an archbishopric and the University of Salento and is a tourist and artistic center.

Renowned for its particularly well-preserved artistic heritage, the city is considered one of the capitals of Baroque architecture, due to the originality and richness of the architectural style developed here from the end of the 16th century, which was made possible by the exceptional malleability of the local limestone, called "Lecce stone". In this regard, we even speak of a barocco leccese, a "Lecce baroque", which has its own characteristics and architectural vocabulary. For these reasons, Lecce has received flattering nicknames such as "Baroque Florence", "Florence of the South" and "Athens of Puglia", and is considered one of the jewels of southern Italy.
