"August 13th 1961 had a deep influence to my life. I went to school in West Berlin but lived in East Berlin . I could not finish my school because I went to a school of commerce in Wedding, where I had to study for another year. The result of the situation was that I had to work from September on as an assistant helper at the hospital at Berlin Prenzlauer Berg.."

" I needed ten years to get out of the country. On 15th of January 1971 the government of the Federal Republic of Germany has payed an amount of money to the former GDR so that I could leave the country to West Berlin. It was a great feeling to pass the border check point "Traenenpalast" and to see him from the back instate of from front site."

"We tried to find a way to west Berlin. We were thinking about what we could do. We had incredible ideas for example to escape via a subway underground but we rejected this possibility. Later we decided to build a tunnel at the area were we lived."

" On April 20th we started to build the tunnel. The tunnel was supposed to reach a length of 60 meters, but after having built 55meters our project was discovered."

STORYLINE:
The construction of the Berlin Wall began on August 13, 1961.
It was a result of the cold war, when the communist government of Germany's eastern sector decided to construct a barrier to the arrest the advance of capitalism.
The city was torn in two, East and West.
Families were separated, lives turned upside down.
Sabine Sprengel was 17 years old when German soldiers started to set up
the wall.
On a sunny Sunday neighbors were ringing at her door saying that right beside her house soldiers are setting up barricades.

In 1962 when East German soldiers were setting up another border check point between East and West Berlin, Sabine Sprengel was got arrested while walking close to the new check point at Heinrich Heine Strasse in Berlin.
Accused of trying to leave East Germany she was sentenced to 4
months in prison.
After being released she applied to leave the country.
