This declaration of love is poetic.

It’s one of the many reasons Mr. Darcy’s character is so loved. Watching his transformation from someone who starts off by only speaking in insults to a man who vulnerably exposes his heart is a fulfilling arc to follow.

There are moments in this film where Elizabeth and Darcy are brutally honest with each other. This is not common at the start of most relationships. In the rain scene, he talks about her class, her embarrassing family, and how he stopped his best friend from proposing to her sister. That’s a lot of honesty. We won’t even go into how he marked her appearance as merely tolerable at the start of the film.

However, they still come together at the end and it’s so rewarding because they fully accept each other for who they are and what they have said in the past. It’s romantic because it’s a real relationship- they’ve not started off on the best foot, however, they have both grown as individuals throughout the entirety of the film and they end up together as people who have been open to growth, forgiveness, and change.
