Leaders today are spending so much time trying to be a “good” leader that sadly they are missing the mark. Making the shift from “trying” to be a leader and instead strengthening the competencies of the person leading, involves consciousness, self-awareness, and a lot of skill building.
Self-awareness is the most important Emotional Intelligence competency that you need to build a strong foundation for leading. And here’s the good thing about becoming self-aware. Your development as a leader and a human being benefit. Becoming self-aware happens through looking inward and reflecting on yourself, your emotions, impulses, needs and behaviors in a non-judgemental, curious fashion and has a positive impact on your effectiveness as a leader.
It can be difficult to slow down long enough to accurately reflect on your experiences. The act of stopping to reflect in this way can cause a lot of anxiety, as it goes against the traditional idea of what it considered “productive”. And while a perceived drop in productivity can feel pretty significant in the moment, it’s nothing compared to the loss of productivity in the long run if a leader is not self-aware. Without self-awareness, leaders get stuck in their patterns of self-deception and plow forward with blind arrogance or defensiveness.
