Neural tube Defects (NTDs) are congenital anomalies (CAs) of central nervous system which occur due to non closure of neural tube. Common NTDs are Anencephaly, myelomenigocele, meningocele & spina bifida occulta. These CAs are fairly preventable by periconceptional use of Folic acid. They are a major cause of preventable long term disabilities. Some of known factor to cause NTDs are some mutated genes and some environmental factors. In environmental factors use of valproic acid during 1st trimester of pregnancy, maternal diabetes, obesity are important. Folic acid supplementation is main stay for prevention. In this lecture I tried to give an overview of all these NTDs. You can comment or interact with me for any queries or suggestions.
