We want to encourage Colorado Parks and Wildlife commissioners to rework phase 4 of their current Bill 114 draft so that it emphasizes non-lethal coexistence measures, rules out recreational killing which includes trophy hunting and ensures that a viable wolf population is widely distributed across public lands.
Leave comments or write directly to these CPW commissioners and with your loudest voice share why you are in support of protecting the wolves that will be reintroduced to Colorado.
Here's some language for you to use:
Dear Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commissioners,
I (INSERT NAME) want to make my voice for wolves heard by encouraging you to eliminate Phase 4 from the wolf reintroduction plan.
Grey wolves can bring about positive ecological, economic and social opportunities for Coloradans, but these positive effects can only occur when wolf family groups are intact and not disrupted by trophy hunting or lethal management.
I believe that wolves should be safe on public lands and not subject to being killed. These lands provide a last refuge for biodiversity especially when it comes to keystone carnivores like wolves.
As it currently stands, Phase 4 is a wolf killing loophole that needs to be eliminated. This language specifically has the potential for serious impact on the small number of wolves that will be released in 2023 and any wolves that thrive moving forward: “Any employee or agent of CPW or USFWS or appropriate state or federal or tribal agency who is designated in writing, when acting in the course of official duties may take a wolf from the wild if such actions are to avoid conflict with human activities.”
This type of language opens wolf killing to any reason and undermines any wolf protections. Wolf/human conflicts are few and far between and I feel that the positive effects of wolves in the wilds of Colorado far out weight the negative.
Please consider eliminating Phase 4 from the current draft and listen to the educated guidance that comes from the organizations that are fighting to protect these important animals.
Sincerely,
