Ep. 45 THESE FOUR WALLS CERAMIC MOSAIC, Prepping continued & cutting down sheet glass!
On the workbench, I have started prepping two substrates. I begin with the Hydroban board substrate, wrapping the edges with alkali resistant fiberglass mesh tape and applying a layer of thinset. This will be sanded down and another layer will be added after it has set up for about a day.
1:24 I show my design layout for "These Four Walls." The concept is to show the monotony of sheltering in place and use tesserae that resembles the tally marks on a prison wall, used to mark the days. I've also switched the material to ceramic dishware, as it has a domestic vibe. It will be made with all white tesserae and white thinset. I find it easiest to cut lots of tesserae in specific heights, and then spread the thinset and add the pieces.
3:01 I've purchase some large pieces of wholesale glass that I need to cut down in to 12"x12" pieces for my students. Each piece needs to be cleaned first. I used my t-square from college to get a square edge.
4:12 Back to work on These Four Walls. I am laying in the floor with horizontal pieces of ceramic plates layed on edge, so the matte side is up. Then I sprinkle a few with the glazed side up for interest. Putting this one together is about as fun as sheltering in place.
5:51 I show how distracted I am by the glorious color in my garden. There is a carpet of pink petals on the ground and my absolutely favorite double pink tulips (Angelique) are in bloom along with my little purple iris, dogwood, daffodils, and grape hyacinth.
7:30 Back to These Four Walls again. I show the pre-cut method of working with tweezers. Finally I am working on the ceiling part!!! Finished! I love the shadows visible from the texture of the pieces!
That's Putting It Together Ep. 45! Thanks for watching! See you next time.
