Beethoven suffered from hearing loss for over half of his life. From what we understand, he experienced tinnitus (a ringing of the ears) and frequency loss (being unable to hear high frequencies), both which only worsened as he aged. This is an approximation of how Beethoven might have heard Symphony No. 9, his final symphony performed two years before his passing in 1827.
