Israel has long planned to control the Suez Canal and build an alternative waterway if that is not possible. And it has the full support of the United States and some Western countries. "In 1958, Israel fought a war against Egypt with the support of the United Kingdom and France to take control of Suez. Probably a factor as to why they're doing so poorly. But Israel has never shied away from its desire to take control of this economically and geo-politically important waterway.
