For Chinese President Xi Jinping, "Children's upbringing begins with mother's education." His mother Qi Xin, as a fine example of the incredible female Party member, runs deep in Xi's outlook on life and philosophy of governance, prompting him to solemnly honor his duties to the nation and the people.
Ahead of the Mother's Day that falls on May 8th this year, China Media Group (CMG) on Saturday published stories recounting how Qi taught his son and set an exemplar model for the Chinese president, in the celebration to honor motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society.
Qi, who was born in 1924, joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 1939 at the age of 15, becoming a staunch supporter of the Party's values and beliefs.
Over the years, Qi taught her son many important lessons of life through her words and deeds, such as to serve the country with selfless loyalty, work hard and handle all affairs well, and be strict with oneself.
When Xi was five or six years old, Qi bought him picture books about Yue Fei, a patriotic military commander during the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279). Yue's story left a lasting impression on him.
Yue is a household name in China. The legendary general fought battles against the invading army of the Jin Dynasty, and is best known for his loyalty and courage. Legend has it that Yue's mother tattooed four Chinese characters on his back: "Jing Zhong Bao Guo," or serving the country with selfless loyalty.
"My mother read me his story from the picture books. I remarked how painful it must have been to be tattooed on his back!" Xi recalled, "And she said, of course it hurt, but in this way, it was engraved on Yue's mind."
"Jing Zhong Bao Guo: I have long remembered these four characters. It is the pursuit of my entire life," Xi said.
Xi put on the backpack and left home at the age of 15 to live and work with the farmers in Liangjiahe Village of northwest China's Shaanxi Province.
During the years in the countryside, Xi was accompanied by a sewing bag embroidered with "mom's heart" made by Qi. The words were meant to remind Xi of staying true to one's original aspiration for the country and the revolutionary cause, which are spirits shared by both the mother and the son.
Qi took to heart the motto to "work well, study well, and handle everything well" in life, and also encouraged her son to follow the same guideline. Her words of support have greatly inspired her son to serve the general public with the goal of achieving a good life for Chinese families.
During Xi's entire upbringing, his mother often urges him to be strict with himself, especially when he is in a leadership position. Xi's philosophy and practice of governing the country has always been featured by maintaining integrity and solidarity to serve the public good.
In June 2000, Qi visited Beiliang Red Army Primary School in Zhaojin township, northwest China's Shaanxi Province.
Zhaojin is noted for its glorious revolutionary tradition. It was there that in the early 1930s, Liu Zhidan, Xie Zichang, Xi Zhongxun, Qi's husband, and other revolutionaries of older generations founded the 26th Army of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army and the Shaanxi-Gansu Border Region revolutionary base.
The Beiliang Red Army Primary School, which was opened in 1955, used to be a revolutionary site, where the Chenjiapo Conference was held.
Seeing its dilapidated classrooms and shabby facilities, Qi mobilized her whole family to donate to relocate and rebuild the school.
In May 2018, Wang Tianjiao, then a third-grader, wrote a letter to Xi on behalf of her classmates, telling him her experience in learning revolutionary history and the development of the school.
Before long, Xi wrote a letter in reply to the students, encouraging them to pass down the red genes from generation to generation.
Xi kept his habit of visiting revolutionary sites even after being elected general secretary of the CPC Central Committee in 2012. These trips extended to places across China.
Over the years, Xi has always kept in mind his mother's words, stayed true to his original aspiration, and taken on his due responsibilities. For Xi, to serve the people wholeheartedly is his "greatest filial piety" to his mother.
