⁃ Count in Smaller Groupings: For the odd bars, Instead of counting 8th notes in 7 or 5, try counting in groups on 2 or 3 for the odd bars.
⁃ Each Paradiddle can be counted as a group of 2
- Each Paradiddle-Diddle can be counted as a group of 3.
⁃ You can count this exercise as: “1-2, 1-2, 1-2-3, 1-2, 1-2, 1-2-3, 1-2, 1-2-3, 1-2, 1-2-3, 1-2-3-4, 1”
⁃ This exercise is a repeated 4 bar phrase! Even if it feels strange at first, try to keep the quarter not pulse in your foot and work with a metronome to develop a strong connection to the pulse.
- When it repeats this exercise switches to the opposite hand lead sticking. Don’t forget to work on your non-dominant side!
- Listen for a relaxed & balenced sound out of both the right hand lead and left hand lead.
- Keep the taps (unaccented notes) close to the playing surface to make sure there is contrast in the sound of your accent and tap heights.
