"Ave Maria," better known as "Hail Mary" in Latin or "Ellens Gesang III" in German,. In contrast to the "Ave Maria" by Gounod and Bach, is an 1825 song composed by Austrian maestro Franz Schubert. The text itself is derived from Sir Walter Scott's famous poem, "The Lady of the Lake". The words of the song inspired its use in the Roman Catholic prayer, which has the same name.
Schubert's Ave Maria is part of his Liederzyklus vom Fräulein vom See. Scott's original poem is set in the Scottish Highlands and is written in English and adapts a legendary romance, relating to Arthurian legends. Schubert published the work in 1826 as D839 Op 52 no 6, and it is described as a prayer to the Virgin Mary, although it was never intended as a real-life use of prayer.
Ave Maria is one of Schubert's most popular and financially successful works. As already mentioned, it never had a liturgical purpose in mind, yet it gained tremendous acceptance and popularity among Roman Catholics, particularly among Latin Catholics. In his letter to his father, Schubert stated that Ave Maria managed to captivate the hearts of its listeners and devote them completely, heart and soul. This is a testament to the brilliance of the melody and the brilliant composition.
Lyrics :
Ave Maria
Gratia plena
Maria, gratia plena
Maria, gratia plena
Ave ave dominus
Dominus tecum
In mulieribus
Et benedictus
Et benedictus
Fructus ventris
Ventris tui Jésus
Ave Maria
Ave Maria
Sancta Maria
Maria mater Dei
Maria mater Dei
Ora ora pronobis
Peccatoribus
Nunc et nunc et in hora
Nunc et in hora mortis
Nunc et in hora mortis nostrae
In hora mortis nostrae
Ave Maria
