Die Ausstellung entdeckt die Schauspielerin und Drehbuchautorin Salka Viertel (1889-1978) wieder. Aus der österreichisch-ungarischen Provinz stammend war sie auf vielen deutschsprachigen Bühnen zu sehen. Mit ihrem Mann, dem Regisseur und Autor Berthold Viertel, gründete sie in den 1920ern in Berlin ein eigenes Ensemble, zog aber 1928 von Berlin nach Hollywood, da Berthold dort lukrative Drehbuch-Aufträge erhielt und Europa für Juden zunehmend unsicher wurde. In Kalifornien unterhielt Salka Viertel eine Art Salon, in dem europäische Exilanten auf Hollywoodgrößen trafen: Ernst Lubitsch, Sergej Eisenstein, Bertolt Brecht, Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau und Charlie Chaplin waren ebenso zu Gast wie Thomas und Heinrich Mann, Christopher Isherwood, Arnold Schönberg und Hanns Eisler. Ihrer engen Freundin Greta Garbo schrieb Salka Viertel als Drehbuchautorin diverse Rollen auf den Leib und brachte neue, europäische und historische Themen nach Hollywood.
In Salka Viertels Lebenswerk spiegeln sich die Spannungen zwischen Theaterkultur und Filmindustrie, Europa und Amerika, eingängigen Erzählungen und komplexen Dramen. Ihr engagierter Einsatz für Flüchtlinge und Fluchtwillige aus dem nationalsozialistischen Deutschland hat im Leben vieler Menschen Spuren hinterlassen.
