By 1429, France was losing the 100 years war badly, with even Paris having fallen to the English. The heir to the French throne, the future Charles VII was approached by a young village girl named Joan who told him that she had heard the word of god, telling her to dress in armour and retake the French countryside from the English, to lift the siege of Orleans and reinstate the French monarch. A sceptical Charles VII sent her with an armed escort to the besieged city of Orleans, only to his surprise finding that Joan had successfully relieved the city. With Joan at the head of the army, they pushed towards Reims where Charles VII was crowned king of France. She was captured by the English during the siege of Compiègne, put on trial for witchcraft and heresy. She was convicted and burned at the stake on 30th of may 1431 in Rouen. According to legend, when her body was burned, her heart remained and continued to beat after she had been reduced to naught but ashes.
