It has been a while since my dad and I shared a weekend away with "enjoying and walking in the outdoors" being the main purpose. Quite a lot of years ago, we both became interested in exploring the River North Esk and its course from Highlands to Lowlands. Glen Esk itself looked intriguing, as did the multiple ancient routes across the hills from there to Deeside and also Glen Clova. It was my dad that prompted a trip to Edzell this weekend to fulfil that interest and go do some exploring. Of particular interest to us both are rivers, and my dad loves fishing but he admits its mostly about being by the water rather than catching fish. I won't go fishing but I share that love for rivers and I particularly enjoy following them upstream into mountains and watching the landscape around them change. Which is very much what this video is about, following the North Esk to near one of its sources, and descending by another. And what's not to love about visiting one of the highest and most remote bothies in the process? Then take in a bonus loop, popular in its own right, ascending by the Falls of Unich and returning back down the Shank of Inchgrundle to Loch Lee and eventually the parked car. A great ending to a great weekend, the weather starts gloomy so not sure how well the initial part of the video will turn out but it does brighten up later. Just hope you can share and enjoy the journey regardless.
