Felton, California - 9 January 2023
1. Damaged fence next to swollen river
2. Various swollen San Lorenzo River rushing under historic covered bridge
3. SOUNDBITE (English) Summer Mangrum, Ben Lomond Resident:
"We've been out of power. We just got it back on for only one day to lose it again. We have our generator, but we lose heat, we lose hot water. So it's like glamping, pretty much. As far as day-to-day impact, we can't make it to work. It's like a rat trying to get out of a maze, trying to find a different little route to get through. This morning it wasn't happening. So that's a huge impact, not being able to get there, at work."
4. Thick mud covering home's yard and driveway
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Summer Mangrum, Ben Lomond Resident:
"I've grown up around here. The last time, I think '97, it feels like it was this bad. It's been quite some time where it's been this flooded. There's just so much saturation, one after the other. The ground's just moving. Our roads are barely passable to our house."
6. River flows below home
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Maria Cucchiara, Felton Resident:
"A huge branch harpooned my roof, and I live in a small studio. I have two kitties and we could've been killed. It was over a ton. So needless to say, it was very disturbing."
8. River flows by home
9. SOUNDBITE (English) Maria Cucchiara, Felton Resident:
"I chose to go for a walk today and count my blessings and see if there's anybody else I can help. That's how I'm choosing to deal with my tragedy."
10. Closed sign outside park
11. Man and boy play on swing in flooded playground
STORYLINE
Evacuation orders were issued early Monday in coastal, woodsy Santa Cruz County, California for about 32,000 residents living near rain-swollen rivers and creeks.
By Monday afternoon, maybe of those evacuated residents returned home to find muddy yards and driveways, but thankfully, no major damage.
A large, muddy slide blocked both lanes of southbound Highway 17, a key but windy route into Santa Cruz from the San Francisco Bay Area. Vehicles were turned back at the summit as crews arrived to clean up.
Despite the deadly nature of storms, which have killed at least a dozen people, residents of tiny, flooded Felton remained calm and upbeat.
Some residents showed up at the town's historic covered bridge park to watch debris floated down the swollen San Lorenzo.
