Thursday's Child (1972–1973)
Episode 1/6: Three of Everything
Period drama set sometime during the end of the Victorian era (the turn of the 20th Century). A classic children's adventure story, adapted from Noel Streatfeild's novel. Dramatised by John Tully, produced and directed by Dorothea Brooking.
The original novel by (Mary) Noel Streatfeild was first published in 1970. She named the lead character Margaret Thursday because Margaret had far to go; the book title comes from the old rhyme 'Monday's Child' ("Thursday's child has far to go"), which is featured as an epigraph in the book. Noel Streatfeild's sequel novel, Far to Go, was published in 1976.
Lady Corkberry is played by Sonia Graham. Before this drama she played Mrs Austen in Escape Into Night (1972) and would later play Martha Parrish in the prison drama series Within These Walls (1974–1978). Both of those shows can be watched on my channel.
THE DVD: At present (date of uploading this video) Thursday's Child has only been released on German DVD (released by PIDAX Film Media: PIDAX Classic Series). This 1974 German broadcast version was retitled "Margaret Thursday : The girl who was found on a Thursday." Episode titles were also reworked (see below for list). The German credits misspell the names of some main cast members (Clare Walker and Sonia Graham), as well as author Noel Streatfeild. The DVD has the original English audio and the German dub.
A footnote on the back of the DVD reads: "The remaining 16mm film material was resampled and restored as best as possible. Unfortunately, it was in such poor condition that deformation sometimes caused a white film effect (a total of around 3 minutes). Due to the complete blue discolouration of the film, the colours could not always be 100% reconstructed." ~ Considering these problems with the source material PIDAX Film Media has done an excellent job with the restoration and the DVD has a high quality picture transfer.
