On July 5th, 2023, King Charles III arrived in Scotland for a special ceremony celebrating the beginning of his reign. It has been called a “Scottish Coronation”, but that isn’t technically accurate. While he was presented with the Scottish crown jewels, known as the honors of Scotland, which by the way are older than England’s, the crown was not actually placed on his head. So it’s not really a coronation. Let’s explore the history of Scotland’s coronation rituals, crown jewels, and that very important big rock, the stone of scone; Plus the significance of this modern ceremony and why it may be the last.
