With over 1200 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 72 casualties in Maharashtra, the state's health infrastructure is fatigued beyond capacity. As Jaslok and Wockhardt hospitals become containment zones with their entire medical and nursing staff prone to infection, it calls into question the existence of efficient treatment procedures and safety precautions across the board. How do private hospitals segregate regular and potential COVID-19 patients? How best can the medical professionals be protected from infection? What government and medical advisory should be issued to residents of communities that stay together in Dharavi and Koliwada as they are increasingly becoming COVID-19 hotspots? Is responsible segregation of mild and severe cases happening across public and private institutions and is an increase expected? What efforts can the government and private institutions collectively make to create a stronger infrastructure to handle the pandemic?
Aditi Ratho, Junior Fellow at ORF, in conversation with Dr. Jalil D. Parkar, Pulmonologist, Department of Chest Medicine at Lilavati Hospital and Research Centre, discusses the current condition of Maharashtra and its healthcare system in the wake of the pandemic, and how the government plans to best equip its medical professionals to sustain the fight on the frontline of the crisis.
