This is the first video in my series of "Walks in Sussex" in which I take a circular route across Heyshott Common & Ambersham Common (located a few miles East of Midhurst in West Sussex and in the South Downs National Park). Once again I am accompanied by my dog, Logan, and I get the opportunity of showing him around some of my old haunts (I used to play on both of the Commons as a small child).
As well as enjoying the superb heathland & woodland, we explore an old sandpit, a perfectly preserved WW2 Pillbox and a disused railway line. It was great to be able to enjoy some "Spring" weather & sunshine after such a wet & miserable Winter in the UK.
PS Since filming the video, I have read that the WW2 pillbox may, in fact, have been built by the Canadians as a "training pillbox" rather than for a specific defensive need. The middle part of what would then have been open land on Heyshott Common is quite boggy at times so might not have been an ideal place for enemy gliders to land. Indeed gliders would more likely have landed on the nearby flat fields at Ambersham (now the polo grounds) that were, in fact, used as a "secret" airstrip by the RAF & Navy in the war. I understand that the pillbox is not listed on a stop line and is not near a river. That might explain the fact that what looks like a bit of old railway track was used in the construction towards the rear of the roof with the odd bit sticking out (the old railway was not too far away) - ie just using any local material available to build it.
