Home defense is important for many people. Those who live in the US have the advantage that they can easily obtain firearms for the purpose, but in most other countries that is a not an option, due to strict weapon laws.
Spear guns are usually seen as a sports instrument rather than a weapon, and therefore they are legal even in some of the most restrictive countries. Well, what can kill a fish can probably also be effective against human intruders - so spear guns might be a viable option for self defense.
