Hate Speech is a hot topic in the Media. The number of reports about Hate Speech/racism sent to German hotlines increased significantly and Hate Speech against refugees or Muslims is a widespread problem in Germany. Even though many social media users who take part in spreading hate are not affiliated with right-wing extremist groups, there are some social media pages which push hate speech forward. Many questions arise with this situation. The presentation will focus on possible definitions, hotline procedures and experiences, and the legal situation in Germany, particularly in regard to racism and incitement to hatred.  It will give information how young people can react if they are faced with racism online and what we all can do to protect children/young people online.In addition, it will show how extremist social media pages use hoaxes and rumours to incite hatred and violence against refugees and other minorities. Finally the presentation tells what is needed to stop this process.
