How far do scholars agree on there being 'known knowns' about terrorism? The post-9/11 explosion of research and debate on the subject (especially in the United States) has transformed the scale of scholarly work in the field. But how far has there emerged a collective agreement on issues such as definition, causation, effects, and appropriate response? In this paper, Professor Richard English argues that, in terms of analytical and practical understanding, we have some strong foundations on which future research and effective policy can be built, and that there are clear routes towards more methodologically powerful approaches still in future years.
