Italian Baroque: Architecture and Frescoes of Pietro da Cortona

The focus of this class is to examine the Italian visual culture of the seventeenth century, to study major monuments and artists, such as Caravaggio, the Carracci, Bernini, and Borromini. In addition to exploring canonical paintings, sculptures, and architecture, the course will also look at the pivotal influence of the Counter-Reformation, the development of the Academies, the importance of ceiling frescoes, paintings by women artists, and the multicultural aspects of art production.
