A Timeless Celebration - The Silver Ghost was the origin of Rolls-Royce's claim of making the "best car in the world" – a phrase coined not by themselves, but by the prestigious publication Autocar in 1907.
She was ordered by supermarket magnate John Sainsbury (1844–1928) in 1921, and completed in November the following year, with chassis 27RG. In 1923 the car was exhibited on Rolls-Royce’s stand at the Olympia Motor Show.
Mr Sainsbury’s specification was detailed even down to: -
“Body to be same style as Ambatiesos Tourer” and “Cushions to be kept low, and specially soft”
The legend is that she was owned by Sir Ranjitsinhji Vibhaji, Maharaja of his state, and who owned eight Rolls-Royces within his fleet of 450 cars…
Ermintrude returned to the UK in 1974. She had been bought by the current owner’s grandfather, Ron Bonar of Dundee, a jute manufacturer and philanthropist. Mr Bonar, a great car enthusiast went on to drive Ermintrude across South Africa, Australia, Scandinavia and America, and all the way along the 3500-mile Oregon Trail.
In the 1990s Ermintrude won 2nd place in the Pebble Beach Concours, and the Louis Vuitton Concours, as well as first places in many prestigious national events.
