Footage taken of Halston's famous townhouse NOV 26, 2006, Designed by the architect Paul Rudolph and called ''extremely sophisticated, starkly modern'' by the Landmarks Preservation Commission. The 25-foot wide, four-story structure at 101 East 63d Street, off Park Avenue, has a three-story living room. It had been the Manhattan residence of Roy H. Frowick - better known as Halston, the clothing designer. Rudolph was the former chairman of the architecture department at Yale University. One of his hallmarks is the incorporation into urban residences of unusual gardens based on Oriental designs. The structure on East 63d Street was built about 1880 as a carriage house. In 1968, Mr. Rudolph completed his total renovation of what had been, in its latest incarnation, a garage, creating a strikingly dramatic facade of steel and dark glass and, within, a central atrium to serve as the focus of the residence. The main living quarters of the house include three bedrooms and three bathrooms. In addition to the unusual living room, which has a large fireplace, the structure features a three-story greenhouse planted with bamboo, an elevator to the upper stories, a kitchen and a garage.
The building's fourth level consists of a separate guest apartment with a living room and deck, bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. The structure is in the Upper East Side Historic District. Included in the townhouse are custom furnishings, also designed by Mr. Rudolph.
Here are photos of the interior of this famous townhouse.
