Charles Edward Hayes (1914-1993) was an amateur film making enthusiast who made home movies from the late 1940's.
"The Animals” (Reel 1, Circa 1960s) shot on standard 8mm film features dogs, calves, cows and the audacious pet cockatoo ‘Ticka’ at home in Heathmont. Included are scenes of Narracan East, King River and the “Astor” motel at Albury where Charles takes some dramatic footage of the Hume Weir. In the beach scenes at Point Leo, Golden Beach and Frankston we see one of the dogs up to its neck in sand and some great examples of sixties swimwear and sun hats. A brief Moomba segment shows the “Frankston by the Sea” song lyrics on one of the floats. Charles also features “The Girls” of the family at tennis, trying out an early model Cortina car and celebrating “Elenor’s 21st” in white gloves and evening gowns.
This film is just one of the many that we are digitising. Discover more about the process on our website.
