The Journal: The Rio-Antirio Bridge (Charilaos Trikoupis Bridge) is named after Prime Minister Charilaos Trikoupis, who, in 1889, first envisaged a bridge connecting the region of Aetoloakarnania (town of Antirion) with the region of Achaia in the Peloponnese over the Patras Gulf. The project was not technically feasible then, and it took the Greek State over 100 years to initiate the construction of a fixed link. The bridge was inaugurated on 12 August 2004 and the first to pass was the Olympic Flame of the 2004 Olympics.
