Korina (African Limba) wood is a very mythical, mystical and sacred building material to Gibson lovers. This is because in the 50s, Gibson used this wood to birth the legendary Explorer, Flying V, Moderne and Futura models. Since so few of them were ever made and the fact the Explorer and Flying V (after many of years) were eventually a success, this led to many people thinking White Limba wood was something sent from the Gods!
Korina is not used on many guitars in Gibsons catalog for a few reasons. First off, there is tradition to up hold. Since not many guitars in the 50s used Korina wood, it doesn't make sense to use it except for special runs.
On top of that, it is not easy to source good, large pieces of Korina since it dries quickly which causes it to crack. Bacteria also like to feed off the freshly cut trees due to the sugar content in this wood which causes black staining. The trees themselves are also prone to termites and heartwood decay.
If you can get past all those hurdles, then you can finally make your Korina Guitar! I'm not 100% confident that a 1950s Korina LP doesn't exist, but in the early/mid 90s Gibson started doing a few per year with what Korina they could get. This appears to have started around 1993 when they did some historic reissues as well as a limited run of 500 Gibson SGs, but there seems to have been between 10-50 additional LP examples made each year until around the early 2000s. These are pretty rare and beautiful guitars usually with awesome quilted maple tops!
