In this video I show the ice conditions on Lake Winnipesaukee as of January 11th, 2023.
The winds were light and the skies beautiful today, and its nearly mid-January, so I decided to take my Super Cub out and check out the ice conditions on Lake Winnipesaukee.

But before I do, here is a spectacular sunrise that I captured on my iPhone camera last week. No modifications were done to this video clip. What you see is exactly what was captured on the camera, including the sounds of the crows.
Returning back to Lake Ice Conditions:
- As can clearly be seen, Lake Winnipesaukee is still mostly free of ice, except for some of the bay areas.
- Based on the broken and non-uniform ice formations in the bays, I would advise not venturing out on any ice on the lake at this time.
- Looking northwards, the Ossipee and Sandwich Mountain ranges look pretty much bare of snow.
- However, further north Mount Washington can be seen standing tall and white capped, covered in snow.
- Looking south towards Alton, it’s pretty obvious much more colder temperatures are going to be needed soon in New Hampshire Lakes Region, if the Alton Bay Ice Runway is to open this year.
- I’m still hopeful we’ll get a cold snap this month that will freeze up the lake and enable pilots and spectators to enjoy the Alton Bay Ice Runway again.
- Flying around the Belknap Mountains the smaller ponds and lakes look frozen over solid, so maybe for the Ice fisherman they can have some winter season fun there.
- On a brighter note, Gunstock ski area looks to have most of its trails covered in snow.
- Lastly, here is my flight student Jason flying out of Moultonborough Airport and headed off to Sanford, ME to take his Private Pilot Checkride.
- He passed with flying colors and is now a private pilot.
