DAY 1 - Our European Adventure has finally begun. We made it to London, our FIRST destination in our month-long travels. We spent the day becoming familiar with London’s subway and bus transportation system as we made our way to our hotel and a stop at Gunnersbury Cemetery where Vito’s grandfather is buried.
My initial impression of London, a city of almost 9 million people...
LOUD with constant movement but very organized and structured. It's a city that is mostly cashless. You should have a credit card that has contactless tap abilities or use your mobile device to pay through your credit card. It is really easy to get around London with many options on transportation. I highly recommend downloading the Citymapper app for your phone. It is an invaluable way to figure out your best option for getting from point A to Point B and for tracking yourself along the way.
To use the subways, tap in with your credit card, ticket or subway card as you enter the subway station and tap out on your way out. Use the same card. The system tracks your entries, exits and will ensure you are not charged more than the daily cap.
To use buses, tap in only with your credit card, ticket, or bus card. Bus fare is £1.75, and a day of bus-only travel will cost a maximum of £5.25. You can transfer to other buses or trams for free an unlimited number of times within one hour of touching in for your first journey.
We will be traveling through London, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, and Poland utilizing different modes of transportation including subways, buses, trains, ferries, and a rental car (yikes, not looking forward to this but it allows us flexibility).
Vito’s father served in the 1st Polish Armored division during World War II and his grandfather fought in the 1920 Polish/Russian War for an independent Poland and then in the 5th Kresy Infantry Division in Africa and Italy during World War II to liberate Europe from NAZI tyranny. We will be following the route of the 1st Polish Armored Division of General Maczek from England to Germany to pay tribute to the soldiers that fought for Poland’s freedom as well as our own. As we travel through these areas we will be taking the opportunity to see and experience the local areas and enjoy local walking trails. Our general itinerary follows:
