Yes being Muslim is specifically a religious identity and anyone can be Muslim no matter their race or ethnicity, however, our society has layered racialized implications over that identity which can result in:

1) People mistaking a Muslim’s ethnicity based off of their religious identity (such as a non-Arab Muslim being automatically assumed to be Arab just because they’re Muslim)

2) People mistaking a non-Muslim for being Muslim because of their race or ethnicity (such as Arab Christians or Sikhs)

This is why Islamophobia is classified as a type of racism, and why it’s so important to continue developing our understanding of the nuances of race, racism, and racialization.
