Okay, so this dishwasher sound is very near and dear to me. This particular dishwasher is the one I grew up with in my underground home in Alaska. My parents bought it in the 1960's and still use it to this day. This is despite the fact that it actually caught fire. . . twice. (For you folks looking at the picture, I put a modern dishwasher in the graphic because, as nice as it sounds, that 1960's dishwasher sure is ugly.)
The dishwasher worked miracles putting me to sleep. Every time my parents washed a load of dishes, I just conked out. There are lots more modern dishwashers out there, but nothing sounds as good as this one. Some people say it actually reminds them of the sound from within the womb, as heard on an ultrasound. Maybe that's why I liked it, or maybe I just liked the sweet sound of me not having to do the dishes. Let me know what you think and if it works to put you and/or your children to sleep!
While playing white noise for babies, it’s important to keep tabs on the volume, because any white noise machine, smartphone, or computer can put out levels that are too loud for your child. It's recommended to play the sound at least a few feet from where your infant is sleeping and to keep the volume no louder than the sound of a soft shower.
Parents can download an app to turn their smartphone into a sound level meter. One good, free, option is the sound level meter app created by the U.S. National Institutes for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) available on the app store as the NIOSH SLM app.
