The front porch was completely rebuilt, mainly by the three apprentices. The columns were replaced, the fir deck was replaced, and now apprentice Nathan Gilbert is working on a new ceiling. The homeowners chose a traditional fir bead board that they will either paint or stain in the future. Nathan explains to Kevin O’Connor how he takes a measurement from the center of the front door to one end of the porch. Starting off at one end of the porch, they nail in the first pieces perpendicularly to the strapping and work their way toward the middle, checking their measurements every few feet.
