STORYLINE
A Lebanese anti-Syrian alliance is promising sweeping change on Monday after winning a majority in the first Syrian-free parliamentary elections in three decades.
Lebanon's staggered parliamentary elections, which dragged on for four weeks in different regions, are the first free of Syrian domination, a 29-year era which ended with the pullout of the Syrian army in April.
An unofficial count for north Lebanon shows an alliance led by anti-Syrian opposition leader Saad Hariri has swept all remaining 28 seats, while its rivals conceded they were heading for defeat.
Official results are expected to be announced later on Monday in a news conference held by Lebanon's interior minister Hassan Sabeh.
Hariri's bloc has now won 72 seats, an absolute majority. However, it's less than the two-thirds majority predicted by the anti-Syrian front.
Former General Michel Aoun, a former ally of the opposition, has 21 seats, while a pro-Syrian Shi'ite Muslim alliance between Amal and Hezbollah have 35 seats.
Setrida Geagea, the wife of jailed Lebanese forces leader Samir Geagea, won one of the Maronite seats in Bcharre, with the Lebanese forces winning six seats in the overall elections in Lebanon.
People took to the streets on Sunday night to celebrate the win of the opposition coalition.
