On August 19, 2023 a major storm, then known as Hurricane Hilary, was projected to slam into SoCal. Third Fleet sent every ship in San Diego that could get underway to sea and had those that had to remain in port double up mooring lines and deploy an anchor at their berths.
With that news and a history of record swell events causing problems with mooring lines, Battleship IOWA's leadership team decided to employ extra protection for the ship. We followed suit and "dropped the hook" at our dock.
Here's how it looked... and what it's like to use anchor windlass gear that hasn't moved in over a decade. (The last time these motors ran was 2012.)
