She's Dynamite was written by Hudson Whittaker, who's performing pseudonym was Tampa Red. He originally recorded the song for RCA Victor on March 20, 1951, quickly releasing the single in April.
In 1951, just one year after opening his Memphis Recording Services studio at 706 Union Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee, Sam Phillips was attracting attention to songs he'd record for release on other labels. He had not yet founded his soon-to-be-famous Sun Records label. Sam's recordings would appear on labels such as 4-Star, Modern, RPM and Chess.
Sam first recorded B.B. King at his studio in July 1950, with additional King recordings made in early 1951. On May 27, 1951, just one month after the release of Tampa Red's 'She's Dynamite', Sam Phillips recorded B.B. King's rendition of the song. The recording was quickly pressed and made available on the RPM label, taking advantage of the scarce availability of Tampa Red's record which was becoming popular with consumers.
B.B. King's rendition had clear trademark sounds of Sam Phillips, in keeping with his style of 'Rocket 88' which Sam recorded for Ike Turner and Jackie Brenston in March that same year.
But B.B. King's version of She's Dynamite didn't really garner the up-take that it more likely deserved. It wouldn't be until after King's parting with Sam Phillips and with the release of '3 O'Clock Blues', one of the best-selling R&B singles in 1952, that B.B. King would finally get the traction for his career to really take hold and set the stage for many deserved successes to follow.
You can listen to the flip side, B.B. Blues, which is also on my YouTube Channel : [ Ссылка ]
I recorded this video of my original 1951 B.B. King release on RPM Records 78 RPM playing on my turntable to share the experience of playing 78s with those who also enjoy the hobby and history of vinyl records, especially of early and original Blues. I do not claim or own, nor imply ownership, of the song or music recording in any way.
