This time painting the protectoress of Lothlorien, Galadriel.
Transcript, including Paints used:
Hello and welcome to another Battle Games in middle Earth Painting tutorial! This time I’m tackling the mysterious lady of the Woods Galadriel. And I’m happy to say I actually found it a really easy model to paint. You could say I was GALADriel to tackle this one…
I rarely undercoat models in White, but with this, it would be so difficult to do it justice from a black undercoat so I undercoated it white and started by painting a very watered down coat of Fenris Grey or the Fang. It’s basically a blue wash but with a tinge of grey to not make it too bright.
While that’s drying I move onto the skin, which may seem surprising, but after the clothes it’s almost the only other colour!
Luckily over a white basecoat this Tallarn Flesh (cadian Fleshtone) over really easily, but I’d make sure it’s nicely watered down. The last thing you want is pure white showing in the recesses. It’ll ruin the model.
Then With Elf Flesh (kislev flesh) I give it a gentle drybrush to highlight that flesh tone. Got to make sure her skin is very pale.
But just to add a real pearly white tone to her skin I add a bit of white to the mix and do some extreme highlighting on the forehead, chin, nose and palm. Be really careful here to not go too far and make it so white you can’t differentiate between cloak and skin.
Then With Bubonic Brown (Desert Yellow/Tallarn Sand) I start a base coat on her golden locks. I wanted it to give a more straw like tone so started with a dustier colour before building up to yellow later.
I think this tone makes it look more lucsious and more Elfy… Pun very much intended.
Using reikland Fleshade, I add a bit of depth to the hair by giving it a thorough wash all over. Allow it to pool in the recesses and using a wiped clean brush, just soak some of it up to make sure it’s really not over shading. Or it’ll end up looking ginger.
Now with a careful dab of white, I isolated the eyes.
And I’ll show you in normal speed I use a nice and thin black and using my hand i draw the bristles of my brush to a very fine point, leaving only the black on the tip. It takes a go or two to make sure there’s enough paint there but this allows for that precision for your elf eyes to see.
Now by adding White to my earlier hair colour, I started a highlight process.
I found there wasn’t and still isnt a satisfying blonde colour. They usually come out too yellow and not pale enough so the simple solution is to make my own.
I do a gentle highlight with that making sure it picks out the strands which would naturally catch the light.
Now it’s barely noticeable at a distance but Galadriel has some bling. She’s got a tiara and a ring of power which I paint in Mithril Silver (runefang steel).
Most of this stuff is straight forward but you do need agood fine detail brush and a steady hand and I’m sure you’ll nail it.
Now to round things off, I tried something different with the base. I glued sand on and lichen on the base, you can get that online or in any model railway shop. Then I painted it, Knarloc Green and Drybrushed it all Gretchin Green.
Then using this amazing tool I got from greenstuffworld.com I punched out some leaf shapes from yellow card. I washed them, and added them to the base.
And there you have it, the wonderful Lady Galadriel! I hope you enjoyed the tutorial. More on the way, including a three part series on something huge… Can you guess what?
