When Steve Allen departed from Tonight! in Jan. 1957, the program underwent numerous changes. NBC attempted to transform The Tonight Show into a late-night news program, re-titled Tonight! America After Dark. Hosted by Jack Lescoulie and Al Jazzbo Collins, it was an abysmal failure. Many NBC affiliates dropped the show. Very few kinescope recordings of this program are known to survive. Jack Paars tenure as The Tonight Show host began July 29, 1957, temporarily ended February 11, 1960, and permanently ended March 30, 1962. Jack Paars tenure temporarily and voluntarily ended during a The Tonight Show taping session, where Paar left in protest of a censored monologue concerning a water closet. Presented here is an audio recording of Jack Paar departing from The Tonight Show. Excerpts of this segment are often viewed; however, rarely in its entirety. I apologize for including no video. But I thought people would enjoy this rare segment of The Tonight Show broadcasting history.
