Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine, Dr Georgiou describes the challenges of working in the NHS at the beginning of the Covid-19 Pandemic. He perfectly summarised the level of tension within the NHS at the time, describing coming into work during March 2020 as an “act of bravery.”
Dr Georgiou shares an insight of life working on the front lines of the Pandemic. He presents the audience with a human case study of a man diagnosed with Covid-19, isolated from his family and completely dependent on the ICU staff. Dr Georgiou reminds us of the dangerous reality of the virus. He states that with local and global collaboration the NHS can learn more regarding the virus, and credits interconnection for where we are today in the fight against COVID-19.
Dr Andy Georgiou is a consultant in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Bristol and trained in both the South-West of the UK and Australia where he worked onboard the Sydney Helicopter Emergency Medical Service. He holds first class honours in anatomical science, and has published 21 peer review articles and 6 books/ book chapters. He was the Director of Intensive Care in Bath for 7 years and was in charge of the ICU during the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic in the UK.
