A considerable amount of planning and investigative work has to be carried out before main construction can begin for the T2D Project. A big part of this is what's called ground investigations.
Ground investigations are crucial to the success of the T2D Project and excavation and lining of the tunnels, helping us understand the nature of the ground and how it will behave during construction of the project. It also helps inform decisions around the type of tunnel boring machines to use during construction.
So far, we have drilled about 783 boreholes reaching depths of up to 80 metres, helping us get a clear understanding of the type of ground conditions through which we will excavate the T2D tunnels and lowered motorway.
