"They put the final things together on the structure of DNA they put the model together and fit all the pieces to the puzzle and came up with the model that was so beautiful it had to be true and not only that but they also saw that there was this base pairing which immediately lended itself since they were looking for a code that this may be the actual copying mechanism for life."

"So it's been Locked away for 50 years and I've only got to see it for the first time yesterday so the family didn't want to keep it locked up so you know there was a lot of discussion about what exactly should be done and what we decided was to put it up for auction we wanted it to be well looked after and that our hope is it will be put on display for the public. So they'll lend it out and it can inspire the next generation of scientists."

"There is really near impossible to estimate because there really is nothing else like it in the world I mean sure there are other Nobel medals but none awarded for DNA. So we estimate that it's going to sell anywhere from 500-thousand and up and what that up means we have no idea."

STORYLINE:
The Nobel Prize medal and other belongings of late molecular biologist Francis H.C. Crick are being auctioned in New York City.
Crick won the prize in 1962 for his work in sequencing DNA.
On Thursday, his Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine medal and diploma are being sold by Heritage Auctions, which estimates it could fetch over $500,000.
It's rare for a Nobel medal to come up at public auction. This marks only the second time that a Nobel medal has come up at auction.
The coveted award is among a dozen items belonging to the molecular biologist that his heirs are selling in New York through the Dallas-based Heritage Auctions to benefit scientific research.
The heirs are selling his possessions in part to benefit scientific research.
The medal is among 10 Crick items on the block, including his endorsed Nobel Prize check, dated Dec. 10, 1962, and a lab coat, plus gardening journals, books and nautical logbooks.
The medal is accompanied by a 2-page Nobel diploma. His heirs have kept the medal in a safe deposit box in California.
Portions of the sale proceeds will go for scientific research at the new Francis Crick Institute in London, slated to open in 2015.
Crick was awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine along with James Watson and Maurice Wilkins. They made their discovery in 1953.
Crick's initials and year of the prize are engraved on the reverse of the medal.
