Dr Manzoor Hussain Malik Consultant Ophthalmologist.
Al–Shifa Eye Hospital, Laser & Glaucoma Centre explains that pterygium is a degenerative growth of conjunctiva which encroaches the cornea. It is more common in hot tropical areas, may be due to Ultraviolet Rays from sunlight, dryness of eyes and exposure to sun and dust. So, use of sunglasses, avoidance form dust and smoke may help reduce its occurrence and growth. Surgical treatment become mandatory when it grows towards pupillary area, and it may badly affect vision even if it is removed at this stage as it leaves behind corneal opacity. Recurrence is very common in young patients. For recuurrent cases surgeon may use mitomycin peroperative or antiVEGF injection sub-conjunctival.
