Set It Off – 2Pac, Jewell, Asu, Tek, Capital LS, Greg Nice, Buckshot (06.19.1996)

“Set It Off” is a song, produced by Darryl “Big D” Harper and originally recorded by 2Pac and Greg Nice on June 16, 1996, on Tupac’s 25th birthday. This was a day before Capital L.S. and The Boot Camp Clik joined 2Pac and Greg Nice to work on the One Nation project and this early version of the song is what is dubbed “Basket Case”. This song is unheard, however it most likely appears on Catalog DAT 5, one of the 2 catalogs DAT that didn’t leak (because it is paired with “The Good Die Young”, which was shared the reel with the June 16 recording of “Set It Off”, although recorded later in July, I believe it’s a B-reel from the 97 Outlawz recording).

The song was re-recorded with completely different verses by 2Pac, Smif-N-Wessun, Capital L.S, Greg Nice and Buckshot, and a hook by Jewell on June 19, 1996 (most likely, because “Never Call U Bitch Again” was recorded on June 19 with Jewell on it). A rough mix of this version leaked in 1998 in horrible quality on a bootleg titled “East 2 West”, most likely from a One Nation work cassette. It leaked again in 2010 in better quality from a 6/10/96 One Nation work DAT. Another posthumous reference mix from 2000 leaked from the Reference CDs.

When the song first started circulating in 1998 it was mistakenly labeled “One Nation”, which is the title of another song, that also has been bootlegged under a different title (Ya Own Style/My Own Style).
