Nursing clinical rotations for our 16-month ABSN program begin the first semester ― week one to be exact. “I was amazed,” said Greg, Xavier ABSN student, class of December 2018. “We were in the hospital doing clinicals the very first week in the program.”
While we can’t guarantee where your clinical rotations will take place, you can rest assured knowing we partner with some of the best health care facilities in the Greater Cincinnati area. In fact, our ABSN students have access to more than 90 patient care locations in the community.
As an ABSN student, your first set of clinicals start out fairly simple, but as time goes on, we place you in more complex situations within diverse areas of nursing practice. You can expect to complete clinicals in areas such as:
· Adult care
· Mental health
· Obstetrics
· Pediatrics
· Community health
“At the beginning, you’re taking vitals and performing head-to-toe assessments,” said Lauren, Xavier ABSN student, class of May 2018. “You then progress into more complex skills, such as starting an IV line. By the fourth semester, you’re caring for patients as a whole.”
Going into clinicals, we try to pair you up with a patient that has a condition that’s similar to whatever you’re learning about at the moment. For example, if you’re in the process of learning about heart function, our goal is to give you a patient with an atrial fibrillation or some type of heart defect.
According to Brianna, Xavier ABSN student, class of May 2018, the clinical experience for nursing students is also about networking. “Making a good impression starts with clinicals,” she said. “It’s important to put yourself out there and talk to everyone in health care you can. You never know who might be able to help you get a job.”
As you’ll see in this video, many of our ABSN students are offered jobs in the community before they even graduate from the program. You can also visit our ABSN program website to learn more about the nursing clinical rotations available through Xavier University: [ Ссылка ]
