Part of the Speak Freely Near-Daily War Journal, from Ukrainian Freedom News
In the weeks before the war, Zakhar Pikh, Ukrainian bartender, told Joe Lindsley, American journalist, on our Speak Freely podcast that the best thing we can do in that time of uncertainty is sing the "Bella Ciao" song, that old Italian partisan resistance song. In the beginning of the war, the first song that Joe heard on the streets of Lviv, after weeks of quiet, was indeed the Bella Ciao song.
Since then Ukrainians around the country have sang and recorded that song, as an act of defiance. And now, as the Iranian women rise up against tyranny, they too are singing this song.
